Hungary: A poetic vision (Három Hét Galéria)
3-19 MAY 2016 /// Solo Exhibition, Három Hét Galéria (Budapest, Hungary)
Fourth solo photography exhibition focused on my personal project dedicated to Hungary and the third happening in Budapest. As before, this showcase consisted of 24 photographs and a unique and poetic vision that mixes pictures with written texts that describe what I feel about the country or the individual moments presented in the images. The complete body of work has thousands of photographs so to pick only 24 wasn’t an easy task. The feedback for now has been great and unusual in a very positive way. There’s a desire to extend the exhibition to feature more photographs in the future, individual showcases dedicated to specific cities or villages and a publication of a book.

Hungary: A poetic vision (Embassy of Hungary - Lisbon)
22 OCTOBER 2015 /// Solo Exhibition, Embassy of Hungary (Lisbon, Portugal)
Solo photography exhibition in the magnificent building of the Embassy of Hungary in Lisbon integrated in the Hungarian National Day and the 59th anniversary of the Revolution and the Struggle for Freedom of 1956.
The reactions, as had already happened in Budapest, were very positive and filled with special moments. I will never forget, for example, the young man who traded a few words with me and that told me that he felt for the first time in the exhibition what we call longing. And after that he went on to describe, for instance, four moments that he associated to four of the photographs of different stages of his life in Hungary, which he felt were represented there. So wonderful. Some of the photographs that were already known (most appeared here for the first time) as ‘The sun in my body’ or ‘The dog and the woman’ have proved again a success, regardless of the nationality of those who saw them or commented. It was a fantastic event overall, very positive. We can only thank, once again, the invitation and all the help and sympathy from the Embassy team. |
Artist's Talk
9 MAY 2015 /// Artist's talk, O'culto da Ajuda (Lisbon, Portugal)
Me and Patrícia Infante da Câmara were invited to do a presentation of our work and talk about ourselves a little in the process. It was a different experience with lots of potential to inspire other people. In the end we talked 1h45m, way more than we expected and used this occasion to showcase both older, present and new work for the first time in public.

Hungary: A poetic vision (Foreign Languages National Library)
1-29 APRIL 2015 /// Solo Exhibition, Foreign Languages National Library (Budapest, Hungary)
«Two years living in
the city of Budapest, between 2012 and 2014. The genesis of this exhibition starts
there but it doesn’t stop on that mere temporal reference. The innocence of
discovery associated with the first moments, the cultural clashes, the small details,
the charm that begins to unravel itself when we let ourselves be lulled by the
breathing of the city and become part of it.
You can sense history everywhere. Buildings, the mysteries and silence of the cemeteries that look like museums, public transport, people: you can see it especially there, in the eyes that tell you everything, in the marks on the skin of those who lived through difficult periods and persist in start anew. Hungary has changed and reborn many times, and always the country and its citizens found a way to turn it into a new chance for beginning. In the process, I began to write some stories related to this whole experience, not only because Hungary is still a mystery to the Portuguese and to most of the world, but also to share a vision that crosses the lines between the poetic and the journalistic. Quickly the narratives widened to other cities, to the all country, to the people, to the idea of organizing a book about Hungary with those stories along with the many photographs that I was taking of it. This exhibition and body of work is a small look at a project that seems as megalomaniac, with endless words and thousands of photographs. A personal diary of some kind, that contains records with an aesthetic that increasingly connects us to dreams and to the various dichotomies present in the country. The Old dating with the New, the imposing architectural amalgam that allows itself to live with others of a more decadent nature, tradition colliding with innovative, chaotic and cared creativity that overflows in the decoration of many places, whether shops, cafes or bars, the seriousness that is attributed to the Hungarians which fades away when we look at the cute dogs that many of them stroll with. Sometimes all this seems strange and senseless in our heads, but that is also why it is a country that needs time and breaks on our fast life to drink from the nectar of the details and look beyond the obvious. It is a very personal and poetic vision about Hungary through the eyes of a Portuguese. A novel without a definitive end.» |
